Community Development Framework

The Community First Development Framework is a cycle of understanding, engagement, genuine co-design and delivery and reflection. It is an evidence and strength based approach, built on 20 years of experience working alongside First Nations people and communities.

The Framework takes account of what has worked, and what doesn’t, to achieve change that is desired, designed and owned by First Nations communities.

We know community development is not a quick fix to addressing disadvantage. It takes time and is a collaborative effort. It is a planned, long-term process

The framework reflects our commitment to continual improvement in community development practice in Australia.

Understand

Our relationships with communities always work to Community First Development’s principles: by invitation, community owned, asset based and relationship driven.

Engage & empower

We take the time to look, listen and learn. We carefully manage expectations and invest time and energy into building lasting relationships built on trust.

Connect & build

We work with communities to identify and plan the next logical step towards achieving their dream. We work together to clearly describe and define what success looks like.

From there we connect and build with existing assets, services, partners, and skilled Community First Development volunteers.

Design & deliver

Collaborating with experts in design and delivery brings strength and practical advice. In this phase we nurture the community’s long-term vision through practical action.

We stick to the plan, maintain contact, closely monitor the work and make sure the right expertise is in place.

Reflect & celebrate

We reflect and celebrate throughout the project as well as at the end. This brings encouragement and motivation. We promote continual learning and improvement in the way we work together to achieve the goals community has set out to achieve.
