Richard Alston, AO

The Hon. Richard Alston, AO is currently a company director and has served on a range of public and private companies in Australia, the UK and China.

He has held various parliamentary positions including the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts in the Australian Government. He then served as the Australian High Commissioner in the UK from 2005-08.

Richard has always been acutely aware of the enormous disparity between the living standards and conditions of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

As Arts Minister, he took a keen interest in Aboriginal art and particularly the circumstances of the artists, as he came to realise that painting was one of the few employment opportunities to escape lifelong poverty for many Indigenous Australians.

He has visited many remote Aboriginal communities and pursued policies to improve opportunities for people struggling to survive under enormous cultural and economic burdens. Prior to entering Parliament he served for five years as Chairman of the Australian Council for Overseas Aid which worked to achieve social and economic equality for Aboriginal people.

“Being an ICV Ambassador is a great opportunity to raise awareness of how every Australian can contribute and make a meaningful difference to the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people”.
